During the November 16 board meeting, trustees, in a 6-0 vote, approved the naming of the softball field at Vacaville High School to honor Joan Mumaugh and her accomplishments during her 34-year career as a coach, teacher, Athletic Director, and Assistant Principal at the school.
During his presentation to the board on November 2, Vaca High principal Adam Wight spoke about Mumaugh, a California State University Chico graduate who coached softball and basketball and was the first-ever female athletic director in the Sac Joaquin section.
He also spoke about how, with the passage of Title IX in 1972, "She worked to build the girl's athletic program from an intramural activity to an interscholastic competition."
"Her philosophy of growing the girls' athletics program allowed our teams to grow, develop, and compete," Wight said.
Mumaugh was twice named Sac-Joaquin Section Athletic Director of the Year. In 2003, she assumed the role of Commissioner of the Monticello Empire League, a position she held until the spring of 2023.
Wight concluded his remarks by adding, "Her vision is the solid foundation for managing our athletic program today."
The official naming ceremony and plaque unveiling will occur this spring at the start of the softball season.
