The Special Needs Parent Liaison is a support for families of children with special needs and the staff who serve them. The Special Needs Parent Liaison is a neutral and confidential resource for families and staff, providing information, training and advice on special needs issues and topics, and supporting relationships between families and staff. 


The Special Needs Parent Liaison works to help children succeed by fostering collaborative and productive partnerships between VUSD and families of children with special needs. Services are available to families and staff at any point in the special education process, whether the need is information, guidance, support, facilitation or dispute resolution.  No referral is necessary to contact the Special Needs Parent Liaison. 

Services Provided by the Special Needs Parent Liaison

Information, Assistance and Resources:

The Special Needs Parent Liaison can provide information, resources and assistance regarding both special and general education, including:

  •   Eligibility for special education
  •   Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  •   Individualized Education Programs (IEP’s)
  •   504 Plans
  •  Accommodations / Modifications
  •  Student Success Teams (SST’s)
  •  Procedural rights & safeguards
  •  District and community resources for children with special needs, families and staff

Facilitation and Support:

The Special Needs Parent Liaison can facilitate and support relationships between families of children with special needs and the District.  The Special Needs Parent Liaison, uses a neutral approach, focused on fostering the child’s success through partnership and collaboration between families and staff.  The Special Needs Parent Liaison can help by...

  •  Having confidential discussions with families and staff
  •  Conducting site observations, home visits or facilitating potential placement observations
  •  Attending IEP, 504 or SST meetings
  •  Attending staff meetings
  •  Facilitating creative solutions

Special Education Parent Nights

Special Ed Parent Night
Please join us at our first quarterly held Special Education Parent Night. The first meeting is on Wed. Sept. 4, from 6:00pm-7:30pm.  The meetings will be in the Library at Hemlock Elementary School, located at 400 Hemlock St.  These meetings will allow parents to connect with the Special Needs Parent Liaison, hear updates from District Staff and provide a forum to share your concerns and connect with other parents.  View additional information for our next meeting English Spanish.
