Superintendent’s Comments/Correspondence

Superintendent Shamieh acknowledged several donations to district sites and thanked the Vacaville Public Education Foundation (VPEF) for funding mini grants to VUSD elementary and secondary schools. Mrs. Shamieh also shared information regarding Vacaville High School’s American Sign Language classes; Will C. Wood Singers’ recent dinner production, “Season of Light”; Vaca Pena Middle School Junior Chorus; Boys and Girls Club grand opening at Jepson Middle School; and honored Donna Suchoski, retiring Staff Secretary in the Superintendent’s office, and Board Member Michael Kitzes, outgoing Board President.

 

Election of VUSD Governing Board Officers for the term December 7, 2017 – December 6, 2018

Board members were elected as follows:

President: Shawn Windham

Vice President: Sherie Mahlberg

Clerk: John Jansen

Secretary: Jane Shamieh

 

Staff Reports and Presentations

  • Orchard Elementary School Report: Principal Ken Ratti, along with Orchard students and chorus, provided an overview of the school's many programs and activities. Mr. Ratti also shared attendance, behavior, and academic target areas for the upcoming school year.
  • Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) Progress Update: Chief Academic Officer Mark provided an update of the 2017-18 district LCAP.

New Business – the following items were approved by the Board:

  1. Approval of the 2017-18 First Interim Report.
  2. Approval of Submission of Form J-13A, Request for Allowance of Attendance Because of Emergency Conditions, School Closure.
  3. Approval of Submission of Form J-13A, Request for Allowance of Attendance Because of Emergency Conditions, Material Decrease.
  4. Approval of Purchase Order between VUSD and Far West Sales, for the VHS Wood Shop Project.
  5. Approval of Agreement with DSA School Inspectors, Inc. for the Jepson Modernization and VHS Wood Shop Projects.

The Board also discussed the following item under New Business:

  • Nominations for 2018 California School Boards Association (CSBA) Delegate(s).

Closed Session Report Out

President Windham reported that the Board approved the following administrative appointments:

 

Amanda Hightman as Director of Transportation, and Lynn Benevides as Interim Principal, Browns Valley Elementary School. Browns Valley Principal Jennifer Austin will be replacing Hemlock/ACE Principal Jennifer Buzolich, who has taken a position with the California Department of Education. Congratulations to all, and best wishes to Jennifer Buzolich on her new position with CDE!

Superintendent’s Comments/Correspondence

  • Superintendent Shamieh acknowledged donations from staff and the public to district sites and programs and introduced newly-appointed administrators Ramiro Barron, Interim Director of Student Attendance and Welfare; Lauren Hylton, Special Education Coordinator; Lois Chancellor, Principal, Ernest Kimme Charter Academy for Independent Learning; and Cicely Rodda, Interim Principal, Padan Elementary School. Mrs. Shamieh also shared photos from several recent school site visits.

Staff Reports and Presentations

  • School Start Time Considerations for 2018-19: Chief Academic Officer Mark Frazier presented considerations and benefits of a later school start time for secondary students, along with staff recommendations for revised start times beginning in the 2018-19 school year.
  • Vacaville Teachers Association (VTA) Update: VTA President Tracy Begley shared information on the new member luncheon; VTA scholarship winners; September Educator of the Month, Betty Tracas; and VTA attendance at a recent Solano County Office of Education Board meeting.

New Business – the following items were approved by the Board:

  1. Approval of Resolution No. 1, 2017-18, Adopting the Gann Limit.
  2. Approval of Resolution No. 2, 2017-18, Applicability of City Building and Zoning Ordinances.
  3. Approval of Resolution No. 3, 2017-18, Recognizing National Suicide Prevention Week September 10-16, 2017.
  4. Approval of Unaudited Actuals for 2016-17.
  5. Approval of Staffing Contracts with StaffRehab, Ellen Hoke Corporation, Jabbergym, and AlphaVista Services, Inc.
