Superintendent’s Comments/Correspondence

Superintendent Shamieh shared information regarding the district's participation in the 7th annual "Team Up Against Drugs" campaign; recent visits to the ACE program, Ernest Kimme Charter Academy, and the Public Safety and Service in Today’s Society’s class field trip to the Fairfield Police Department training facility; and a Parent Academy held at Jepson Middle School. Mrs. Shamieh also reviewed new and revised board policies on the Consent Calendar agenda for approval.

 

Staff Reports and Presentations

  • Alamo Elementary School Report: Principal Derek Wickliff, along with Alamo students and chorus, provided an overview of the school's many programs and activities. Mr. Wickliff also shared attendance, behavior, and academic target areas for the upcoming school year.
  • Annual Williams Report Presented by Solano County Superintendent of Schools Lisette Estrella Henderson: Superintendent Estrella Henderson presented the annual Williams Report to the Board, which provides information regarding the Williams Uniform Complaint process and procedures on schools ranked in deciles 1-3 on the 2012 Academic Performance Index.
  • California Accountability and the Local Indicators Presentation: Chief Academic Officer Mark Frazier and Buckingham Charter Magnet High School Principal Paul Tytler shared baseline Local Indicator information for VUSD's district and charter schools.

New Business – the following items were approved by the Board:

  1. Approval of Unrepresented Employee Group Salary Schedule.
    • Prior to the approval of the revised salary schedule, Director of Human Resources Manolo Garcia provided an update to the Board regarding the restructure plan for Maintenance & Operations, Facilities, and Transportation.
  2. Approval of Contract with The Speech Pathology Group, Inc.
  3. Approval of Professional Services Agreement with Hibser Yamauchi, Inc. for the Markham Elementary School Improvement Project.
  4. Approval of Contract with Warren Consulting Engineers, Inc. for the Markham Elementary School Improvement Project.
  5. Approval of Agreement with Tri-City Fence Co., Inc. for the District Improvement Hemlock/ACE Fence Project.
  6. Approval of Agreement with de Rutte Builders Corporation for the VHS Wood Shop Improvement Project.

Closed Session Report Out

President Kitzes reported that the Board approved the following administrative appointments:

 

Dan Banowetz as Chief Facilities, Maintenance & Operations Officer; Jennifer Leonard as Director of Communications & Community Engagement; Arron McGuire as Facilities Manager; and Wendy Muro as Mental Health Clinician II. Congratulations to all!

  • Superintendent Shamieh acknowledged donations from staff and the public to district sites and programs and introduced newly-appointed administrators Ramiro Barron, Interim Director of Student Attendance and Welfare; Lauren Hylton, Special Education Coordinator; Lois Chancellor, Principal, Ernest Kimme Charter Academy for Independent Learning; and Cicely Rodda, Interim Principal, Padan Elementary School. Mrs. Shamieh also shared photos from several recent school site visits.

Staff Reports and Presentations

  • School Start Time Considerations for 2018-19: Chief Academic Officer Mark Frazier presented considerations and benefits of a later school start time for secondary students, along with staff recommendations for revised start times beginning in the 2018-19 school year.
  • Vacaville Teachers Association (VTA) Update: VTA President Tracy Begley shared information on the new member luncheon; VTA scholarship winners; September Educator of the Month, Betty Tracas; and VTA attendance at a recent Solano County Office of Education Board meeting.

New Business – the following items were approved by the Board:

  1. Approval of Resolution No. 1, 2017-18, Adopting the Gann Limit.
  2. Approval of Resolution No. 2, 2017-18, Applicability of City Building and Zoning Ordinances.
  3. Approval of Resolution No. 3, 2017-18, Recognizing National Suicide Prevention Week September 10-16, 2017.
  4. Approval of Unaudited Actuals for 2016-17.
  5. Approval of Staffing Contracts with StaffRehab, Ellen Hoke Corporation, Jabbergym, and AlphaVista Services, Inc.
