May 17, 2018 Governing Board Meeting Highlights

Superintendent’s Comments/Correspondence

Superintendent Shamieh introduced newly-appointed Principal Colleen Moe, Vaca Pena Middle School. Also during Superintendent’s Comments, Director of Communications and Community Engagement Jennifer Leonard provided an update regarding the upcoming “Plant a 1,000 Flowers” activities being held May 18-25.


Closed Session Report Out

President Windham reported that the Board approved the following administrative appointments: Ali Eeds as Principal, Buckingham Charter Magnet High School; Jessica Reed as Principal, Callison Elementary School; Char Mise and Joanna Little as Mental Health Clinicians; and Kara Cooper as Coordinator, Special Education. Congratulations to all!


Public Hearing

  • Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) for Ernest Kimme Charter Academy for Independent Learning: Principal Lois Chancellor presented Kimme’s 2018-19 LCAP to the Board. Adoption of Kimme’s LCAP will be held on June 14, 2018.

  • Budget Proposal for Ernest Kimme Charter Academy for Independent Learning: Senior Director of Fiscal Services Kelly Burks presented Kimme’s 2018-19 proposed budget to the Board. Adoption of Kimme’s budget proposal will be held on June 14, 2018.

Student Recognition

  • Padan Elementary Principal Cicely Rodda and Assistant Principal Kristie Banowetz recognized Bernardo Arreola, Padan’s Outstanding Student.

  • Will C. Wood High School Principal Adam Rich recognized Brianna Chavez-Mancilla, Wood's Outstanding Student.

  • Board President Shawn Windham and Superintendent Jane Shamieh recognized Student Board Representatives for their service to the Board for the 2017-18 school year.

School Reports and Presentations

Padan Elementary School Report: Principal Cicely Rodda and Assistant Principal Kristie Banowetz, along with two Padan students, provided an overview of Padan’s programs and provided information on academic and social-emotional programs, student supports, test scores, and attendance and behavioral data.


Staff Reports and Presentations

  • State of California New Construction and Modernization Eligibility Update: Dan Banowetz, Chief of Facilities, Maintenance and Operations, provided a review of California’s school facility program and funding eligibility requirements.

  • Crossing Guard Update: Assistant Superintendent Janet Dietrich provided an update on changes to crossing guard services beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

Old Business – the following items were approved by the Board:

  1. Approval of Contract with Sunterra Solar Inc. for the Vacaville High School Building E and M Photovoltaic Project.

  2. Approval of Contract with Swierstok Enterprise, Inc., dba Pro Builders, for the Callison and Cooper Elementary Schools Shade Structure Project.


New Business – the following items were approved by the Board:

  1. Ratification Approval of the 2017-18 Contract, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local #1021.

  2. Approval of Agreement with Hibser Yamauchi Architects, Inc. for the Markham Elementary School Improvement Project.

  3. Approval of Contract with Synovia Solutions.

  4. Approval of Contract with Solano County First 5.
