About Adult & Community Education

The Vacaville Adult and Community Education program strives to offer opportunities for life-long learning.  The goal of the adult school is to assist adults in becoming effective participants in our society, to be self sufficient, to strengthen and enrich home and family life, and to provide individuals with the preparation necessary for the demands of our ever-changing economy.

Vacaville Adult and Community Education programs are available to residents of Vacaville and the surrounding areas.  All our classes and programs emphasize quality, are designed to meet the needs of our students and are approved by the Vacaville School Board and California Department of Education.  Our adult school has a safe, clean campus with plenty of parking.  Classrooms are provided with the latest equipment and our instructors are certificated and/or specialists in their fields.

The Vacaville Adult and Community Education program offers many choices for adult learners.  Our main campus is located at the Ulatis Alternative Education Center, 100 McClellan Street; however, we also have programs at other school sites and public and private locations in our community.  Whether you need your high school diploma or GED, or if it’s a computer class, a class to learn English, a career training program, or one of the many different special interest classes you are interested in, there is something for Everyone at our adult school.  Come join us today!

The Vacaville Adult and Community Education program currently offers the following programs:

Vocational Education:  Classes offered in our vocational education program are based on employment trends and community needs.

Computer Classes:  Our computer classes are tailored to our students’ personal and professional needs.   These classes serve students who have never had any hands on experience to the more advanced and experienced computer user.  Our course offerings include Computer Literacy, Keyboarding, Computer Operator/Software Application, and a Computer Basics/Internet class for our Spanish Speakers.  We are continually changing and upgrading our program to meet the needs of our community and its students.  Certificates of completion are awarded at the end of each class.  Classes are held in the evening.

Health Care Vocational:  Our health care vocational programs are a collaborative effort with the Boston Reed College.  These programs include:

Administrative Medical Assistant:  This course is designed to provide the participant with the administrative skills required to help manage a busy medical office.

Clinical Medical Assistant:  The CMA/”back office” medical assistant program provides student training to assist the doctor in patient care.

Pharmacy Technician:  This program is designed to train students to assist the pharmacist with prescriptions, client records, and other related duties (inventory control, purchasing) found in a pharmacy setting.

We also offer Electrocardiography Training (complete training in EKG/ECG testing procedures and Phlebotomy Certification (training for proficiency in venipuncture) as needed.

The Vacaville Adult School is currently offering a Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program.  This program will prepare students to provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill, injured, convalescent and disabled persons in a variety of settings.  Students will be prepared to take the California State exam for licensure.

High School Diploma/GED Program:  The Vacaville Adult School High Diploma program is designed to meet the graduation requirements and model standards set by the state of California and the Vacaville Unified School District.  The adult school offers several academic courses through out the school year.  In addition, students can receive credit toward their diploma using many avenues such as previous high school course work, community college courses, private school course, military service, GED testing, and work experience.

Individuals not wishing to complete the high school diploma program may elect to complete a series of tests and obtain their GED.  The adult school offers a GED preparation class to help students prepare for the test.  GED testing is scheduled during the week and on selected Saturdays through out the school year.

Adult Basic Education:  The Adult Basic Education program provides instruction in subjects such as reading, spelling, writing and mathematics for students who want to work on their basic skills for employment, for personal gain, to enter the high school diploma program or for GED preparation.

Adults with Disabilities:  The purpose of this program is to provide educational and vocational opportunities designed to meet the needs of adults with developmental disabilities.  Our goal is to develop each student to his/her greatest potential by providing a wide range of classes and experiences.  The Vacaville Adult School works in conjunction with the USARC/PACE program and provides socialization skills coupled with basic cooking, music, job skills, personal living skills, arts and crafts and computer classes.

English as a Second Language (ESL):  ESL classes are for those who want to learn English skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Classes are open entry with students starting anytime during the school year and include different levels of proficiency from beginning literacy to advanced levels.

Community Based English Tutoring:  This is a family literacy program  designed to  help parents, who are limited English themselves, raise their general level of English skills while helping their children and other children in the community succeed in school.

Community/Special Interest:  The program is committed to the philosophy of life-long learning.  Primarily self-supporting through student fees, this program exists entirely to meet the diverse personal and professional needs of adults in the community.    Classes are offered in a wide range of disciplines ranging from literacy and personal health to homemaking and technical.
