VUSD Updates On Air Quality

Air Quality Measures To Minimize Exposure for Students and Staff

VUSD will follow data and guidelines from the Spare the Air Current Conditions table and the Air Quality Index. The following are measures that VUSD staff will take to ensure minimal exposure to unhealthy air.

air quality index

If PM2.5 air quality levels enter Hazardous or Very Unhealthy ranges:

  • High and middle schools will shorten passing periods when possible in order to minimize student exposure to the air
  • After school sports will be cancelled
  • PE classes will be held indoors
  • Schools will hold "rainy day" schedules keeping students indoors for lunch and recess
  • Masks will be available in the school nursing office for students who feel they need one
  • Doors and windows will be kept closed as much as possible
  • Absences for students with health conditions or concerns will be considered excused
  • Schools may be closed
air quality unhealthy

If PM2.5 air quality levels enter Unhealthy range:

  • Outdoor school sports practices will be cancelled or held indoors. Some indoor sports may hold practice or games. Schools will communicate with athletes and parents about practice adjustments.
  • PE classes will be held indoors
  • Schools will minimize time outdoors for lunch and recess.
  • Indoor space will be provided for students who do not wish to go outside during break periods
  • Masks will be available in the school nursing office for students who feel they need one
  • Doors and windows will be kept closed as much as possible
  • Absences for students with health conditions or concerns will be considered excused
Air quality Index- 150
  • PE classes may be held indoors. Physical activity will limited.
  • Space will be made available for students indoors during recess and lunch. Lunch and recess time may be limited.

Schools Closed Oct 12th and Oct 13th

We hope this message finds your families safe and well. Our hearts go out to those who have been evacuated or have lost loved ones, pets and homes in this tragedy. Thank you for your support as we work through the challenges of this disaster.

Because the evacuation areas in Solano County have increased, effecting even more VUSD families and staff and the air quality is now at hazardous levels, all VUSD schools and offices will be closed on Thursday October 12th and Friday October 13th. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this emergency. Take care and stay safe.

All VUSD schools will be in session Wednesday, October 11th.

VUSD understands that many parents do not get time off for poor air quality; cancelling school has the potential to create significant child care challenges for families with young children. We also understand that many students have asthma and health issues that are negatively effected by poor air quality. We respect parents' choices to keep students home as needed. Students who are absent with parental permission due to air quality this week will have excused absences.
